Bogue Sound Custom Yachts 23
Bogue Sound Custom Yachts
is a new builder of cold-molded "Carolina Style" sportfisherman located
in Swansboro, NC. I was contracted to design the hull, structure and
fuel tank for the first of their boats, a 23 foot center console. As
the builder is used to working with relatively little in the way of
drawings, he would figure out the deck and console himself.
The hull is very shapely, with lots of flare forward turning into tumblehome at the transom. The deadrise was kept fairly moderate in order to maintain a shallow draft suitable for the shallow sounds of Eastern North Carolina. Her freeboard forward will allow her to venture offshore in settled weather. Overall, I think she will be a very pretty boat!
Her construction is from multiple layers of marine grade plywood, epoxied together. The hull will be glassed over, faired and painted. Stringers and frames are also made from marine grade plywood. Her fuel tank is aluminum and will be bolted into the hull between the stringers. I think she will be a solid boat and should give many years of service with minimal upkeep.
The
original plan was to build four of these boats before moving on to
a larger model. The first two hulls are being built side by side, the
next two will follow later depending on market conditions. As this is
being written, hull #1 is nearing completion and will be powered by an
outboard on a bracket. Below is a link to a photo album of the boats
with a large number of pictures showing them throughout the construction
process. I'll include more as they become available.
Update (2/10/09): Due to the slow economy and a lack of capital, Bogue Sound Custom Yachts has closed down. The two hulls are still available, though they are not quite complete. If you are interested in them, please contact me and I'll help you reach the builder.
